The poor must bear more risks and costs for their survival - Review of 'The Gold Rush'.

The Gold Rush is a film shot and released by Chaplin in 1925, and finally released in China 100 years later. This time it was released in a restored version of the soundtrack, a total of 95 minutes, which is longer than the 72 minutes of the original silent film version, with subtitles retained and the narration dubbing removed, and it is said that the dubbing version is not good. The picture is not bad after repairing, relatively clear, and the expressions of the characters can be seen clearly on the big screen.

This movie is a comedy romance with many funny classic scenes, such as eating leather shoes, turkey hallucinations, dancing with dogs, bread dancing, cliff cabins, etc. After the laughter, the audience can feel the loneliness and sadness in the protagonist's heart. The male protagonist, as a wandering prospector, possesses almost nothing. Although it is a happy ending in the movie, the result of this poor person in reality is more likely to freeze to death in the wind and snow, starve to death, be shot to death by others, be eaten by bears or people, and fall to the bottom of a cliff and die. Even if he is lucky enough to return to the town alive, he is more likely to do heavy snow shoveling and other work, and be used, scolded and even beaten by rich people. When a beautiful girl sees a poor person, she is more likely to hide away, and even if she meets again, she will not remember the poor person, and it is almost impossible to have love. But the poor can still have hope, through their own efforts, take more risks, pay more prices, and have a certain probability of becoming rich and realizing their dreams.

Some of Chaplin's movies I have seen before, such as Modern Times and City Lights, also talk about the experience of homeless people, but there is no happy ending, and it feels more realistic. Although The Gold Rush has a happy ending, everyone can still feel that it is not easy for the poor to live. The happy ending of the film is the director's blessing and hope for the lives of the poor.
